Philippines: 7,000 islands, and the right five will change your trip

A long palm-backed beach curving along a Philippine coastline

Philippines: 7,000 islands, and the right five will change your trip

The Philippines is Southeast Asia’s least-planned and most-rewarding archipelago. The logistics are real — domestic flights, boat transfers, weather windows — but the payoff is turquoise water that rivals the Maldives, limestone cliffs that rival Ha Long Bay, and a warmth in the people that rivals nowhere.

Palawan

4–6 days

El Nido for the lagoons and limestone karsts that define Philippine postcards. Coron for the shipwreck diving and the twin lagoons. Puerto Princesa for the Underground River (a UNESCO site worth the day trip). Palawan is the marquee destination and it earns it.

Best for:

Couples, adventure seekers, photographers, island-hoppers

Planner’s edge:

El Nido’s island-hopping tours are graded A through D — we know which ones are worth the full day and which can be skipped for a private boat instead.

Cebu + Bohol

3–5 days

Cebu for Oslob’s whale sharks (controversial but spectacular) and Moalboal’s sardine run. Bohol for the Chocolate Hills and tarsier encounters. The two islands connect by fast ferry and pair naturally.

Best for:

Families, wildlife enthusiasts, first-time Philippines visitors

Planner’s edge:

The whale shark experience is ethically complex — we brief you honestly and offer alternatives if you’d rather skip it.

Siargao

3–5 days

The Philippines’ surf capital, but also a genuine island escape for non-surfers. Cloud 9 for the break. The rock pools and lagoons for the Instagram. The pace for the reset. Still relatively undeveloped compared to Bali or Thai islands.

Best for:

Surfers, couples wanting a laid-back island, younger travelers

Planner’s edge:

Siargao’s infrastructure is limited — we plan the accommodation and transfers so the rustic charm stays charming rather than becoming inconvenient.

Island-Hopping Circuit

10–14 days

Manila as a brief gateway (one night is enough). Then south: Palawan for the karsts, Cebu and Bohol for the wildlife, Siargao for the surf and stillness. Domestic flights connect the dots — we build the routing so the island-hopping feels like a journey, not a series of airport transfers.

Best for:

Travelers with 2 weeks who want the archipelago experience, adventure couples

Planner’s edge:

Philippine domestic flights are unreliable in typhoon season (July–November) — we build buffer days and backup routing into every island-hopping itinerary.
