Western Australia: Margaret River, the Kimberley, and a coast the rest of Australia barely knows

Western Australia is the country’s largest state and its most underestimated. Perth is a city finding its moment. Margaret River is a world-class wine region that also happens to have exceptional surf and old-growth forest. The Kimberley is one of the world’s last true wildernesses. Each is a reason to come. Together, they justify a proper trip.

Perth + Fremantle

2–3 days

A city that punches above its weight: art, food, waterfront, and a pace Sydney and Melbourne can’t replicate. Fremantle adds history, markets, and the ferry to Rottnest Island. Both are better for a slow morning than a rushed checklist.

Best for:

City stopover, families, arrivals and departures through Perth

Planner’s edge:

Perth pairs best with Margaret River as a 5–7 night stay — the city’s caliber justifies more than a transit night.

Margaret River

3–5 days

Cabernet Sauvignon that competes with Bordeaux. Chardonnay of genuine precision. Cellar doors that range from iconic estates to small-batch producers you’ll want to find again. Add: Cape Leeuwin lighthouse, the Boranup karri forest, surf breaks worth driving for, and kitchens that take local produce seriously.

Best for:

Wine + coast, couples, those who want a wine region with strong non-wine days built in

Planner’s edge:

Margaret River is three hours from Perth — long enough to feel like an escape, short enough to drive; we plan the cellar door sequence so the day has an arc, not just a list.

The Kimberley

5–10 days

Gorges, ancient rock art, waterfall-fed swimming holes, and a red-dirt remoteness that recalibrates your sense of scale. Bungle Bungle Range, El Questro, Mitchell Falls. Best accessed by small-group expedition or private charter. This is not a casual add-on.

Best for:

Adventure travelers, photographers, those seeking genuine wilderness

Planner’s edge:

The Kimberley is seasonal (May–September only — the wet season closes it) and logistics-heavy; we plan access points

Bell Gorge in the Kimberley, Western Australia, a layered red-rock cascade flowing over horizontally-bedded sandstone into a clear plunge pool.
