Iberia: from Gaudí to the Douro, from tapas bars to island coves

Spain and Portugal fit together better than most people plan them. The cities connect by train. The wine regions connect by road. The coasts connect by mood. We plan Iberia as a coherent trip, not a series of disconnected city breaks.

How we plan Iberia

One trip, two countries

Spain and Portugal connect better than most itineraries admit — by train between cities, by road between regions. We plan the border as a feature, not a seam.

Cities to arrive, regions to stay

Lisbon, Barcelona, or Madrid to land, then the countryside chapter: Douro, Rioja, Andalusia, or the islands. The contrast carries the trip.

Eat on local time

Dinner at ten, lunch as the main event, pintxos standing up. We build the days around how Iberia actually eats — the schedule is part of the experience.

Portugal Focus

7–10 days

Lisbon for 3 days: Alfama, Time Out Market, the fado houses worth going to. Porto for 2 days: Ribeira waterfront, port tastings in Gaia. Douro Valley for the finale: terraced vineyards, a quinta overnight, and the N222 driven slowly.

Best for:

First-time Iberia visitors, wine + food travelers, city breakers

Planner’s edge:

We plan Porto and the Douro as one trip — the two together are greater than the sum.

Spain focus

7–10 days

Barcelona for 3 days: Gaudí sorted in advance, El Born for evenings, day trip to Montserrat or Girona. Rioja or San Sebastián depending on whether wine or food is the priority.

Best for:

Architecture lovers, food + wine, those wanting Spain specifically

Planner’s edge:

San Sebastián restaurant reservations need 2–3 months lead time for the starred places — we plan ahead.

Cross-Border

14–21 days

Lisbon → Alentejo → Seville → Granada → Barcelona. The full peninsula — Portuguese cities, Spanish south, Moorish architecture, Catalan coast.

Best for:

Travelers with 2+ weeks, those wanting the cultural depth of both countries

Planner’s edge:

The train network is better than people think — we plan the mix of trains, drives, and flights that keeps the trip flowing.

Islands

7–10 days

Azores for volcanic landscape and mid-Atlantic solitude. Madeira for levada walking and subtropical gardens. Balearics for Mediterranean polish. Canary Islands for year-round warmth.

Best for:

Those wanting island recovery, year-round warm weather, walkers, couples

Planner’s edge:

We recommend specific islands based on purpose — Mallorca for polish, Menorca for calm, Azores for those who want something genuinely different.

TRIP RHYTHM

From Gaudí to the Douro

Iberia rewards a coherent route over a checklist: one or two cities, one wine region, and time on a coast or island. The connections are short; the temptation to overfill is the only real risk.

Planning notes

When to go

April through June and September through October are the sweet spots — warm, uncrowded, and harvest-adjacent in the wine regions. August belongs to the coast; the interior cities empty and swelter. The islands hold their own nearly year-round.

How long

7–10 days does one country properly; 14–21 days makes the cross-border route work without rushing. The islands add 3–5 days whenever they’re included.

How we help

We sequence the cities and regions so the trip reads as one journey, book the quintas, bodegas, and tables that define it, and time the route around the harvests and festivals worth planning for.
