A turquoise cove beneath pine-topped cliffs in the Balearics

A turquoise cove beneath pine-topped cliffs in the Balearics

Balearic Islands: Mediterranean coves, and the version of Ibiza nobody warns you about

Mallorca for cycling, hiking, and boutique fincas in the Serra de Tramuntana. Menorca for unspoiled beaches and a pace that resists the pressure to develop. Ibiza for the north coast — design hotels, yoga retreats, and a sunset at Benirràs that resets something. Formentera for simplicity so extreme it’s almost aggressive. The Balearics work best when you choose one island and go properly, rather than island-hopping on a schedule.

Mallorca

4–6 days

The Serra de Tramuntana is the island’s spine and its soul: a UNESCO World Heritage mountain range with dry-stone terraces, hilltop villages, and cycling routes that attract serious riders from across Europe. Valldemossa and Deià are the most visited villages for good reason — the former for its Carthusian monastery, the latter for Robert Graves and a quality of light that has attracted artists for a century. Palma is an underrated city: a Gothic cathedral, a Moorish palace, and an old town restaurant scene that holds its own against Barcelona.

Best for:

Cyclists, walkers, couples, food travelers, and those wanting a Mediterranean island with genuine depth

Planner’s edge:

A wrong-side-of-Mallorca booking in August is a very different trip from a Serra de Tramuntana finca in May — we place you in the right part of the island for what you want.

Cala Macarella on Menorca, a turquoise cove framed by pine-topped limestone cliffs with sailboats at anchor.

Menorca

3–5 days

Menorca is the Balearic that said no. No mass tourism, no mega-clubs, and by deliberate local policy, very little new development. The result is an island of prehistoric talayot monuments, unspoiled coves accessible only on foot or by boat, and two distinct characters: the British-influenced Mahón in the east, with its deep natural harbor, and the Spanish Ciutadella in the west, with its cathedral square and artisan workshops. The beaches on the south coast — Cala Macarella, Cala Turqueta — are among the best in the Mediterranean.

Best for:

Families, couples seeking quiet, those who want genuine Mediterranean character over resort amenities

Planner’s edge:

Menorca’s best coves are only accessible by boat or a walk — we plan the days so you find them rather than settling for the accessible ones.

A small whitewashed beach pavilion at Cala en Forcat in Menorca, sandy beach in the foreground with a rocky pinnacle rising from the turquoise water just offshore.

Ibiza & Formentera

3–4 days

The north of Ibiza and the electronic music capital of the world share a coastline but almost nothing else. Sant Joan, Sant Carles, and the area around Portinatx are rural, quiet, and beautiful — finca hotels, local restaurants, and a pace that the south of the island abandoned decades ago. The old town (Dalt Vila) is a UNESCO-listed walled city worth an afternoon. Formentera, a 30-minute ferry from Ibiza town, has the clearest water in the Mediterranean and almost nothing else — which is precisely the point.

Best for:

Design and wellness travelers (Ibiza north), those wanting maximum simplicity (Formentera), and curious travelers who assume they know what Ibiza is

Planner’s edge:

Ibiza north and Ibiza south require different property lists entirely — we know which fincas and boutique hotels sit in the quieter part of the island.

Dalt Vila — Ibiza's UNESCO-listed walled fortress old town, the cathedral and white houses descending the hill above the harbour, a wooden tall-ship sailboat moored below the lighthouse.
